I was honoured with the opportunity to work as an intern at Genex Space, a start-up in the Aerospace industry. Under the careful supervision of my manager, Ms. Nikhitha, I was given research work on various topics related to this industry, which will later be used by ISRO.

I learnt many interpersonal skills, such as time management, teamwork, coordination, etc. I was even blessed with the chance to put my knowledge into practical use by hosting a class for younger students in the ASC-2023 summer camp. I learnt the many ways to research effectively, including Al and use it in my research.
I learned that it is better to divide tasks into a team and work towards finishing the job in coordination with your team members. The last 4 weeks have certainly gifted me with some essential curricular and non-curricular lessons that I will never forget for the rest of my life. I would like to thank the whole Genex Space team for their efforts in familiarizing and helping me during this internship. It was a great experience working with everyone, learning some crucial lessons from each one of them.

The Power of Learning with Intent: A Guide to Purposeful Education

In a world brimming with information, the art of learning has evolved beyond the mere acquisition of facts. Learning with intent, a deliberate approach to education emphasises quality over quantity, depth over breadth, and purpose over passive absorption. It’s about cultivating a mindset that transforms knowledge into meaningful action and empowers individuals to navigate the complexities of the modern age effectively.

At its core, learning with intent involves setting clear objectives and actively engaging with the subject matter. Whether exploring a new language, delving into scientific principles, or honing a creative skill, intentionality infuses each learning endeavour with purpose and direction. As Albert Einstein aptly said, "The only source of knowledge is experience." This quote amplifies the importance of active participation and hands-on learning, highlighting that true understanding arises from deliberate engagement with the material.

Furthermore, engaging actively with the material is paramount. Embrace challenges and embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth. This proactive approach not only deepens your understanding but also cultivates critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in any field.

Moreover, learning with intent emphasises relevance and applicability. Seek out opportunities to apply newfound knowledge in real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between theory and practice. By contextualising learning within your personal or professional sphere, you enhance its significance and utility, making it more likely to stick.

In conclusion, learning with intent is a transformative approach that transcends traditional notions of education. By setting clear objectives, engaging actively, prioritising relevance, and fostering a growth mindset, individuals can harness the full potential of learning to achieve their goals and thrive in an ever-changing world. So, embark on your learning journey with purpose, and let each lesson propel you towards a brighter, more fulfilling future.

Gadget-free Summer Break

With summer vacation around, I urge parents to explore various ways to facilitate children to make healthy choices during their vacation time.

Last week, when we asked our Early Years to visualise their characters and create a story, most of them came up with stories about ghosts and monsters attacking others.  When we had conversations about what gave them this idea, we understood that these story ideas emanated from their online games. While gaming per se develops specific skills and requires focus, it also stifles the imagination of young children. Since it is visually appealing, children tend to remember those images in their heads all the time.

I often see parents providing very young children (1 year to 3 year olds)  with gadgets as the means to keep children engaged and entertained. I see children watching phones in the waiting areas of clinics, hospitals, school lobbies and banks.

This brings us to a fundamental question “ Should children be engaged by parents all the time?” Not necessarily. What is likely to happen if children were not handed over gadgets at the waiting lounges? What would they do? Some of them may cry, some may throw a loud tantrum, and some may crib. If parents show resilience and allow children to settle down themselves, they will soon find ways to keep themselves engaged. Likewise, during summer vacation. What if this is a “no gadget” vacation and parents do not take up the responsibility to engage their children? What would children do? How can parents show resilience here and facilitate children to make healthy choices? I leave the readers with this thought for this summer vacation.

The Eye of the Storm

In the hushed embrace of an Indian evening, our journey began, a symphony of anticipation orchestrated by the hum of jet engines and the flutter of boarding passes. The promise of adventure beckoned from distant shores as we boarded our flight bound for the United Kingdom, our hearts aflutter with dreams of far-off lands and newfound horizons. But as we soared through the velvet sky, a foreboding shadow loomed on the horizon, a harbinger of the chaos that was soon to unfold. In the blink of an eye, the tranquil serenity of our airborne sanctuary was shattered by a deafening crack, a burst of purple lightning that danced across the heavens with an otherworldly fervour. The air crackled with electricity as the plane shuddered beneath the force of the storm, its metal frame quivering in defiance against the tempestuous onslaught. And then, in a heart-stopping moment of sheer terror, the heavens unleashed their fury upon us, casting our fragile vessel into a maelstrom of chaos and uncertainty. The sky darkened to a shade of ominous charcoal as the winds howled with a primal ferocity, tearing at the wings of our faltering craft with savage intent. The cabin was awash with panicked cries and frantic prayers as we clung to our seats with white-knuckled desperation, each passing moment stretching into eternity.

And then, as if mocking our feeble attempts at control, the plane tilted almost 180 degrees, its nose plummeting towards the earth with a sickening lurch. Time seemed to stand still as we hurtled towards the ground, our fate hanging in the balance as the world spun wildly out of control. But just when all hope seemed lost, a glimmer of salvation emerged from the chaos, a beacon of light amidst the encroaching darkness. With a mighty roar, the engines surged to life once more, their thunderous symphony drowning out the cacophony of the storm as we clawed our way back from the brink of oblivion. As the storm clouds parted and the sun cast its golden rays upon the horizon, we emerged battered but unbroken, our spirits buoyed by the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. And though our journey had been fraught with peril and uncertainty, we emerged from the crucible of the skies stronger and more resilient than ever before. For in the crucible of adversity, we discovered the true measure of our strength, our courage, and our unwavering determination to defy the odds and chart our course through the tempestuous seas of life. As we touched down on solid ground once more, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of the world around us, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human soul.

7 Tips for Balancing Technology and Screen Time

In today’s era, technology has changed pretty much everything; including the way we work, live, and learn. It has made life a lot easier in many ways, but it also presents some challenges that we need to navigate, especially when it comes to our kids. They're growing up in a world filled with gadgets and screens, which is great because it makes them ready for a future that's increasingly tech-focused. But, like everything else, it's all about finding the right balance. Think about online learning, for instance. It's convenient, flexible, and has many benefits. But too much screen time can also affect our kids' health—causing issues like eye strain, headaches and disrupting their sleep schedule. Not to mention, it could spike their anxiety levels too. So, what can we do to strike a balance? Here's what we suggest:

1. Setting some ground rules:

Technolgy & Screen Time - Setting some ground rules We all lose track of time when scrolling through Instagram or watching our favourite shows. So, setting up rules about when and how long we can use our devices can help reduce screen time. This way, we'll also have more time for family bonding or physical activities. For example, how about we all agree not to use our devices during dinner? Or dedicate an entire day to digital detox by indulging in non-digitalafter-school activities.

2. Being mindful of how and when screens are used:

Technolgy & Screen Time - Being mindful It's crucial for parents to teach their kids to self-regulate their screen usage. By setting clear rules and using parental control tools, they can ensure that their children are using their devices responsibly. It's also a good idea to have separate devices for schoolwork and personal use. Some of the best schools in Bangalore teach children at an early age about the advantages of regulated screen time to maintain a tech-life balance.

3. Having some screen-free time:

Technolgy & Screen Time - Having some screen-free time Encourage your children to set aside time for screen-free activities such as diving into a good book, taking a refreshing walk, or playing an instrument. These breaks not only cut down on screen time or help reduce technology's impact on students, but they also give everyone a chance to connect with each other.

4. Adjusting tech expectations:

Technolgy & Screen Time - Adjusting tech expectations It's not feasible to expect kids to cut out tech completely. So, the goal should be to help them moderate their tech usage, like encouraging them only to use tech for schoolwork during study hours. There are several schools in ITPL that offer alternatives to screen-based activities, showing students the importance of a balanced lifestyle.

5. Limiting app notifications:

Technolgy & Screen Time - Limiting app notifications Do you ever find yourself distracted by a notification that says 50% off at your favourite online store? Yes? Well, kids experience the same with their apps. By helping them to limit these notifications, they can focus better on their online classes and other activities. Which, in turn, will help them reduce their screen time.

6. Not looking everything up immediately:

Technolgy & Screen Time - Not looking everything up immediately It's important to show your kids that they don't need to run to Google every time they have a question or problem. Sure, it's easier, but it also makes them overly dependent on technology. Let's lead by example and show them that it's okay not to have instant answers. This approach can also reduce screen time plus improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Schools in Byrathi are even training students to excel with limited internet access to ensure they build strong skills for a successful future.

7. Unplugging before bedtime:

Technolgy & Screen Time - Unplugging before bedtime Our last tip, but certainly not least, is to support your kids to shut down their devices about 30–40 minutes before bedtime. It might seem tough, but trust us, this small change can make a big difference to sleep quality. Plus, it is also a great opportunity for them to replace screen time with calming activities like reading or meditation. In a nutshell, technology is here to stay, and it's a big part of our lives, especially for our kids. But we have to ensure that it is enhancing their lives, not causing problems. And to do just that, finding the right balance is a must. At Ekya Schools, we've adopted an educational approach that stresses the importance of this balance. We monitor internet usage, establish tech rules, and regulate digital activity. As one of the renowned CBSE schools in Bangalore, we're committed to helping each student achieve their personal and academic goals. #StudentBlogger: World War II By Aditi Revankar, Grade 10B, Ekya Schools, JP Nagar

Grade 10 of JP Nagar brought out this theme wonderfully by presenting a skit on World War 2. World War 2 created massive havoc not only in Europe but also in the entire world. A war that took millions of lives could have been prevented if only the Leaders of the European Nations had open communication, empathy and a desire for World Peace. In this age, open dialogue, compassion and a great mindset are paramount in preserving World Peace.
Many of us have heard of it and of its significant events, such as the rule of Adolf Hitler, nazism and the genocide of the Jews, but do we know the leading cause for it? Grade 10A has perfectly re-enacted the scenes that occurred in the war and thoroughly explained them to us.
The skit starts off with the introduction of the Axis powers and the Allies. The Axis powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) were the soldiers in red, and the Allies (France, Great Britain and the United States) were soldiers in blue. The following scenes are each of the leaders of the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Japan, and General Montogomery with their troops.
In these scenes, each of them shares their war plans and motivates their troops before the battle. Adolf Hitler was played by Rohith Maiyya, Winston Churchill was played by Agasthya Dhanraj, Hirohito was played by Daksh Barua and General Montogomery was played by Ashrith B. Each and every one of them nailed their characters to perfection! We thank the voice actors because they did an excellent job in voice acting for the actors.
Next were the battle scenes, which included the gunfire between the Axis powers and the Allies and the aerial dogfights. The actors did an excellent job playing the soldiers in the war. The very last scene is when the Allies capture the Axis soldiers. Seeing their defeat, Hitler shot himself, and that was a cherry on top. I'm sure everyone was amused by the well-performed assembly and even learnt something from it. This assembly has taught us the events of the war as well as the importance of maintaining world peace and harmony to prevent such chaos and destruction from happening. We hope to see more exciting assemblies like this one in the future!
