Although English is a funny language, it has become a global language. It is one of the highest-speaking languages in the world. And to effectively communicate in English is crucial in today’s time. For students, parents, and professionals alike, speaking English confidently and correctly is a necessary skill.  However, speaking in English can be tough, especially for beginners. Adding Unnecessary Words and Missing Necessary Words

These errors can make sentences sound confusing or change their meaning completely. For example, saying "I am agree with you" is incorrect because the verb "agree" doesn't need the helping verb "am" before it.  On the other hand, forgetting a necessary word can also lead to problems. For instance, saying "I looking for a bus to the city center" is incorrect because the word "am" is missing. When talking about something happening right now, we use the Present Continuous tense by adding "am," "is," or "are" before the verb, along with the suffix "-ing." So, a correct version of the sentence would be "I am looking for a bus to the city center." Remember, it's important to use the correct words and structure so that your meaning is clear. 

Saying Incorrect Negative Sentences

Students often make mistakes when forming negative sentences. For instance, saying “I no like pizza" instead of "I don't like pizza." In the Present Simple, to create a negative sentence, we need to use "don't" or "doesn't" before the verb.  It's also important to remember that after "he," "she," or "it," we should use "doesn't" and remove the "-s" ending from the verb. For example, instead of saying "He's not wanting to go," the correct phrasing is "He doesn't want to go." 
  • Using the Wrong Word Order in Questions 
Using the incorrect word order in questions is another common English language mistake. For instance, asking "What you are doing now?" instead of the correct form, "What are you doing now?".  Remember word order is crucial in the English language. Not Using Adverbs

Many beginners don’t use adverbs in their speech. Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They add more details to a sentence and make it more interesting. So don't forget to use adverbs in your speech to make it livelier and more descriptive.

 Missing Comma in a Compound Sentence

It becomes difficult to distinguish between different thoughts or ideas, making the overall communication less clear. A compound sentence is made up of two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction like "and" or "but."  For example, instead of saying "I went to the store and I bought some apples," we should say "I went to the store, and bought some apples." By using a comma, we can indicate the pause between the two independent clauses. This helps our listeners understand our thoughts and ideas more effectively. So, don't forget to include commas in compound sentences when you're speaking or even writing. 

Faulty sentence structure

Faulty sentence structure is a common English language error that arises when a sentence is not properly constructed. This can make the sentence difficult to read and understand. An example of this error is using too many commas, which can make a sentence disjointed and confusing. Another example is failing to use proper subject-verb agreement, which can make a sentence grammatically incorrect. To avoid this error, it's important to practice constructing sentences with clarity and precision. 

Lack of pronoun

A common error in English is forgetting to use pronouns. Pronouns replace nouns to avoid repetition. For example, instead of saying "John went to the store," just say "He went to the store." Remember to use pronouns like he, she, it, they, we, etc. 

Unnecessary Shift in Verb Tense

It occurs when there is an inconsistent change in verb tense within a sentence, paragraph, or passage. This can confuse the reader and disrupt the flow of the writing. To avoid this error, you should ensure that you maintain a consistent verb tense, making sure that all verbs match in past, present, or future tense.

Instead, "its" without an apostrophe indicates possession. Missing apostrophes result in incorrect pluralization, such as "apple's" instead of "apples".  

Poorly Integrated Quotation

Lastly, poorly Integrated Quotation is a common English grammar mistake. It happens when a quote is not smoothly integrated into a sentence.  For example, "She said, 'I like pizza.' instead of 'She said that she likes pizza.' To fix it, we need to integrate the quote correctly into the sentence.

Gadget-free Summer Break

With summer vacation around, I urge parents to explore various ways to facilitate children to make healthy choices during their vacation time.

Last week, when we asked our Early Years to visualise their characters and create a story, most of them came up with stories about ghosts and monsters attacking others.  When we had conversations about what gave them this idea, we understood that these story ideas emanated from their online games. While gaming per se develops specific skills and requires focus, it also stifles the imagination of young children. Since it is visually appealing, children tend to remember those images in their heads all the time.

I often see parents providing very young children (1 year to 3 year olds)  with gadgets as the means to keep children engaged and entertained. I see children watching phones in the waiting areas of clinics, hospitals, school lobbies and banks.

This brings us to a fundamental question “ Should children be engaged by parents all the time?” Not necessarily. What is likely to happen if children were not handed over gadgets at the waiting lounges? What would they do? Some of them may cry, some may throw a loud tantrum, and some may crib. If parents show resilience and allow children to settle down themselves, they will soon find ways to keep themselves engaged. Likewise, during summer vacation. What if this is a “no gadget” vacation and parents do not take up the responsibility to engage their children? What would children do? How can parents show resilience here and facilitate children to make healthy choices? I leave the readers with this thought for this summer vacation.

The Eye of the Storm

In the hushed embrace of an Indian evening, our journey began, a symphony of anticipation orchestrated by the hum of jet engines and the flutter of boarding passes. The promise of adventure beckoned from distant shores as we boarded our flight bound for the United Kingdom, our hearts aflutter with dreams of far-off lands and newfound horizons. But as we soared through the velvet sky, a foreboding shadow loomed on the horizon, a harbinger of the chaos that was soon to unfold. In the blink of an eye, the tranquil serenity of our airborne sanctuary was shattered by a deafening crack, a burst of purple lightning that danced across the heavens with an otherworldly fervour. The air crackled with electricity as the plane shuddered beneath the force of the storm, its metal frame quivering in defiance against the tempestuous onslaught. And then, in a heart-stopping moment of sheer terror, the heavens unleashed their fury upon us, casting our fragile vessel into a maelstrom of chaos and uncertainty. The sky darkened to a shade of ominous charcoal as the winds howled with a primal ferocity, tearing at the wings of our faltering craft with savage intent. The cabin was awash with panicked cries and frantic prayers as we clung to our seats with white-knuckled desperation, each passing moment stretching into eternity.

And then, as if mocking our feeble attempts at control, the plane tilted almost 180 degrees, its nose plummeting towards the earth with a sickening lurch. Time seemed to stand still as we hurtled towards the ground, our fate hanging in the balance as the world spun wildly out of control. But just when all hope seemed lost, a glimmer of salvation emerged from the chaos, a beacon of light amidst the encroaching darkness. With a mighty roar, the engines surged to life once more, their thunderous symphony drowning out the cacophony of the storm as we clawed our way back from the brink of oblivion. As the storm clouds parted and the sun cast its golden rays upon the horizon, we emerged battered but unbroken, our spirits buoyed by the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. And though our journey had been fraught with peril and uncertainty, we emerged from the crucible of the skies stronger and more resilient than ever before. For in the crucible of adversity, we discovered the true measure of our strength, our courage, and our unwavering determination to defy the odds and chart our course through the tempestuous seas of life. As we touched down on solid ground once more, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of the world around us, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human soul.

Mythology books can be very mysterious and thrilling to a bored mind. I love reading mythology books and Percy Jackson and Magnus Chase are two of the most loved book series in the world. But have we ever thought about the author of these superb books?

I now present to you…… Rick Riordan! He is an American author who loves to publish books on Greek and Egyptian myths, with detestable villains, lovable heroes, mystery, magic, action, vengeance, and romance. What more could we ask for!?

Several of my classmates (including myself) and a few higher grades are engrossed in reading this spectacular series, which is why I have chosen to blog on this topic.

Percy Jackson is a 12-year-old boy who discovers he is the modern-day son of a Greek God – Poseidon. Magnus Chase is a 16-year-old boy who discovers he is the Norse demigod and a maternal cousin of Percy’s niece. This brings in the connection between Egyptian and Greek history.

In these adventures, Percy or Magnus go with their demigod and satyr friends to help save the world from ancient evil spirits lurking in the shadows slowly gaining power to rise and attack.

Over two million people like Riordan’s books which shows how amazing Riordan’s books are! So, I recommend you read these fantastic series and later share your experience with the world!

Indiscriminate use of Social media by students during the pandemic and its impact

Social media addiction among teens and young adults has increased multifold during the pandemic.  It is considered a behavioral disorder in which the individuals are totally captivated or trapped by social media and are unable to free themselves from its clutches despite clear consequences and drawbacks. Teenagers engage in some form of social media or other or if not several, on a daily basis (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Twitter, Discord, Video games).

This has led to increased indiscriminate and blind consumption of media, increased dependence on social media as a way to feel good, losing out on physical social engagements, causing a negative impact on learning, strained relationships with family and friends.

A very important cause for concern is the decline in mental health as a result of increased Social media addiction and also the fact that Social media is an easy platform for online aggression, cyberbullying, impacting the emotional wellbeing of children. All this has led to a decreased focus on academics and a decline in academic performance.

FOMO or ‘Fear Of Missing Out is apparently “that uneasy and sometimes all-consuming feeling that you're missing out on or not being included in what your peers are doing”, which is another main reason why teenagers are unable to be off social media.

The only way to save our youth from the fangs of social media addiction is not to totally deprive them of their engagement on Social media, but to prevent addiction to it by way of supporting them and guiding them to engage with social media safely, responsibly, and effectively.

We need to remind them to balance their time spent online with chores, homework, spending quality time with family and friends rather than being cooped up in front of the computer or phone screens all the time. It is important to keep a watch on the activities the children are engaged in instead of allowing them to be all by themselves and engage liberally with social media.

While this is indeed an uphill battle, we still can have an influence on the way our children see the effects of social media, helping them make the right decisions.

I feel a lot can be changed in our lives positively if we acknowledge the work and sacrifices of others. But in this fast-moving world that we are part of, the good deeds of others go often unnoticed. We are so busy chasing what we want to achieve and racing from one time of our lives into another that we hardly remember to pause and express our feelings for others around us. We can compare this behaviour to the blinders that race-horses wear. They inhibit horses from looking anywhere else but forward and only focus on the path that they tread on. Although race-horses wear this by force, we, unfortunately, wear this by choice.

Some of our students do display this tendency.  Some of our alumni return after a long time just to meet the teachers who taught them and show their gratitude with this simple gesture. . But this number is few. For this generation that is blessed with technology and advanced communication that connects people across the world, it should be easier for students to keep in touch with their mentors. But, this is not so.

It's sad to see that students do not seem to use technology to connect with their school, their teachers, and many others who mattered to them at some point in their lives. The children of today, as in all ages, have been absolute wonders, each gifted with marvelous talents, a hard-working nature and it is no less than a pleasure to be a contributing factor to their growth.

But, as I mentioned earlier, Is it the rigorous work culture nowadays that is making them forget about the people in their past? Or just a lack of gratitude? Or is it this so-called “generation gap”?

Or perhaps, it is simply how they have been brought up. A rather extreme rendition of the phrase “don’t look back at your past”, even if it is merely to take a glimpse at the people who have helped them, or to realize the sacrifices others have made for their growth.

I wonder if parents nowadays encourage their children to thank their teachers. “They will pass. You will see a lot of teachers in the future”. That is true, teachers are hundreds, but the teaching is one. Once you have learnt something from someone, no matter who they are, you wouldn’t have to learn it again! And I feel if someone makes such an impact on you that the things you have learnt from them are something that you can carry on for a lifetime, they should not just be thanked, but enshrined. Maybe these lessons you learn from teachers go unnoticed, but they do exist. Students need to realize this and remember someone who spends their lives wishing for their success- their Teachers.

The thought of feeling grateful even if not conveyed should exist in the mind. This thank-you is different from what celebrities do on the stage whenever they win an award. It is not a formality, but a deep feeling.

It is as simple as looking back to a time, to people like one’s teachers, and expressing this deep feeling of gratitude. I feel a student-teacher bond is for a lifetime and both need to cherish and nurture it forever. Teachers look forward to hearing from their students, their life journeys, their achievements, and their growth. These moments are precious in the lives of a teacher and I wish all our students to value this aspect and this beautiful teacher-student relationship.

I am proud that I am part of the organization which respects and inculcates this value in the students and every member of its family. It is not only a daily practice to share a good thing or an affirmation but it is our culture.
