Service learning helps students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and empathy and respect for others.

Service learning is important to Ekya as it helps our students identify themselves as part of the community and pick up on civic engagement skills. Apart from the opportunities to work with diverse members from the community, service learning is a teaching and learning potential that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and a program to teach civic responsibility.

At Ekya, students participate in newspaper drives organized annually with all efforts directed towards charity. Having raised Rs. 20,000 in their previous drive, Ekya students also participated in the ITC- Wow! Programme where they handed over old paper cartons, newspapers and books in exchange for note books and stationery.

Giving back to the community is at the heart of Ekya’s service learning. Ekya students visited the Bhartiya Grameen Mahila Sangh, an organization for the welfare and empowerment of destitute women, children, the aged and the partially impaired. Spending the day with the inmates of the home, students also handed over the notebooks, stationery and the amount raised during the newspaper drive, to the organization.

Service Learning at Ekya also includes the Ekya CARES Program which stands for Ekya Creativity, Action, Research, Empathy and Sustainability. The program immerses students into real world issues, and challenges and inspires them to find solutions.

The Environment Club at Ekya plays an active part in the Service Learning program. Students as the Green Ambassadors of the club, lead the efforts towards environment preservation and restoration. Observing World Environment Day this year, Ekya students planted 22 saplings in the school vicinity.
